These word game apps will keep you entertained for hours, regardless of your preferences. Whether you prefer something more traditional that draws inspiration from word game classics like Scrabble or you have no qualms about trying something new.

You should immediately download the following 11 word game apps.

Wordscapes

Wordscapes is a must-try if you consistently complete your weekly crossword. With intersecting lines of blank spaces, this word game has a crossword puzzle-like design, but there are no clues this time around. As an alternative, you receive three to seven letters for your “wheel.”

By dragging your finger across the screen, you can connect these letters to create words. However, if you spell a word that doesn’t appear on the board, it becomes a “bonus word” that can be used later in the game. The objective is to fill your board with appropriately chosen words.

Although the instructions are fairly simple, there are a number of “power-ups” that take this app to the next level, and there are weekly Wordscapes tournaments for die-hard fans. This word game’s levels each feature beautiful images of nature, which adds to its appeal. The mountainous or coastal view will therefore offer some respite as you jot down words, even though you might grow frustrated as you level up.

Words with Friends 2

Like other well-known word games, Words with Friends has a cult following of its own. The second version has the same goals as the first but also includes the newest features, such as a Solo Challenge mode. This word game app has the wonderful feature of allowing you to play against a friend (as the name suggests) or a random opponent.

Players can only form words horizontally or vertically, similar to Scrabble. A tile from your rack and a fresh letter from the Tile Bag can be switched during your turn. With a few exceptions, the game usually ends when one player has used every tile in their rack.

SpellTower

If the fantastical name of the game doesn’t immediately pique your interest, a round will be enough to do so. The goal of the game, which is essentially similar to Boggle, is to create words using the letters on your board. As you experiment with the more than eight different modes, things start to get a little bit more complicated, like “Search,” which asks you to find the best word on the board.

A very helpful and user-friendly website for new players is SpellTower’s own website. The most popular word game was created by Zach Gage and Jack Schlesinger in 2008, and more than a million people have downloaded it since then. Participate in the word game fun by adding to the growing list of words created by SpellTower fans; there are already over a billion of them!

Word Cookies!

This word game, which gives Wordscapes and other similar apps a sweet twist, will be a hit with bakers. You still make words out of the letters in your “bowl,” but this time your guesses are made into cookies that are placed on a baking sheet, and each level has a different flavor, such as (but not limited to) oatmeal, ginger, and red velvet. Players, or bakers, can participate in different packs and even weekly missions. Despite the app’s adorable aesthetics, there are usually quite a few ads in between rounds. However, Word Cookies does offer memberships! to skip the ads and return to baking.

Scrabble GO

The name of the game’s mobile adaptation, Scrabble GO, accurately describes what it is: a nearly century-old game. You can choose to play with strangers or connect with your friends on Scrabble GO, much like Words with Friends 2 does. Seven tiles from the set of 100 letter tiles will be provided to you in either case. Similar to Scrabble, you create words by aligning letters vertically and horizontally. Each letter also has a specific value. The boosts and gems you earn as you play are what distinguish Scrabble GO from its rival gaming apps. These not only help you advance your abilities but also present fresh obstacles in the word game.

Alpha Omega

Alpha Omega is another variation on the crossword puzzle that requires players to unscramble letters rather than construct words from clues. The app has a simple and calming layout with intersecting rows. Each time a word is successfully unscrambled, it locks in place to assist you in identifying the other words on your board. You can click on the clue at the top of the screen if you run into trouble. If this seems difficult, remember that the first and last letters of each word are already in their proper positions.

Typeshift

Zach Gage also created Typeshift, which is playable online or downloaded for your iPhone, Android, or tablet. You will still slide columns up or down to spell out a word in the center row regardless of how you decide to play this no-cost word game. You must create words that fit these themes in themed crossword puzzles like Snowday, Take Me Out To The Ballgame, and Earth Day.

Crossword Puzzle Redstone

Although these crosswords are available at your fingertips thanks to an app, this game is still the same old word game that has amused generations. Thanks to Redstone, thousands of crosswords are available for free; the app has even been dubbed the “crossword lover’s dream app.” In addition to thousands of puzzles, you can also select between four different difficulty levels and take advantage of various features like “Smart Look Up,” which will give you suggestions for your next move. This app also has the benefit of correcting mistakes for you rather than requiring you to scratch them out on a physical crossword.

Pictoword

With just one hint, or possibly two, Pictoword challenges players to spell a hidden word. Two images are displayed on a player’s screen during each round. Randomly arranged letters that make up the word that the two images are attempting to spell will appear while using this app. It is your job to guess this word, not necessarily using all of the available tiles. Sometimes, in order to understand the word, you have to figuratively put two and two together.

WordJong

While WordJong draws its inspiration from Mahjong Solitaire, players in this game solve daily word puzzles rather than match-winning symbols. Each day brings a new challenge, much like in word games like Wordle. You can go back and play as many rounds as you like if you were quick to decipher the word that day. Additionally, there are seven different Zodiac characters, each with a unique style and degree of difficulty. You earn more gold coins and power-ups as you complete more challenges.
